Toyota Football Fever Show 18

What the UK papers said this week?

1) Pardew to the rescue

SACKED West Ham manager Alan Pardew was given a Christmas Eve reprieve from unemployment after Charlton Athletic chief Peter Varney elected to boot out flop boss Les Reed and replace him with former Hammers boss Pardew.

Pardew reckons West Ham sacked him too early — and insists he can save Charlton from the drop. He was dismissed from Upton Park a fortnight ago after failing to build on last season’s appearance in the FA Cup final.

But he finds himself once again back in a job and is thought to be on a £1million bonus if he keeps the Addicks in the top flight.

2) Chelsea fans abuse Hunt

STEPHEN HUNT ran a gauntlet of hate at Stamford Bridge yesterday even though he did not step foot on the pitch.

The Reading midfielder was targeted by Chelsea fans still angry at his challenge in October which left Blues keeper Petr Cech with a cracked skull.

Thousands of home fans screamed and shouted at Hunt as he warmed up on the touchline in front of the East Stand during the 2-2 draw.

The Irish ace, 25, who has been the victim of hate mail since the incident, was dropped by boss Steve Coppell yesterday.

Coppell claimed the decision was tactical but conceded the player had been affected by the build-up

3) Dubai Consortium plan to sell Liverpool

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL CAPITAL, the investment company behind the proposed takeover of Liverpool, reportedly plan to sell the club in 2014 having first made a huge profit from their ownership of the Anfield club.

According to The Daily Telegraph, 'DIC see their investment in Liverpool as purely a business deal built round the new stadium Liverpool are planning at Stanley Park.’

‘When they sell in seven years' time they are hoping to make a huge profit, providing a return of around 25 per cent on their investment for every year of ownership.

‘There appear to be no plans to invest in new players.'

4) Rafa rages in Crouch coat fury

RAFA BENITEZ blasted Peter Crouch after the Kop flop threw a coat in the air following his early substitution.

Liverpool boss Benitez, who hauled off Crouch in the 56th minute, rapped: “He had three clear headers. It could be bad luck because the goalkeeper made the right decision.

“But if you are at a club where other strikers who are scoring and playing well, that is something you need to manage when you get a chance.

“But there are no plans to sell him — I am happy with him here.”

Likely Moves in the January Transfer Window

1) Owen Hargreaves to Manchester United

This transfer has been on and off more times than Titus Bramble’s concentration during a Premiership game, but the recent signs are that this may well go through in the January window. The big attraction for Sir Alex Ferguson is that Hargreaves is still available for the Champions League – and with Bayern lining up a replacement an offer of above 15m may see the England midfielder in a United Shirt next month.

2) Micah Richards will go to Chelsea for 18 mill

A short trip upstairs to Mr. Roman’s office may be in store for Jose Mourinho in the new year. Right-back has been a problem spot for Chelsea, with even midfielder Geremi deployed there in recent weeks - an answer to that problem may be Man City’s young star Micah Richards. Tipped to replace Gary Neville in the England team, he would be seen as an ideal choice for the blues, with Shaun-Wright Phillips used as bait and to reduce the asking price.

3) Robbie Keane to Aston Villa

It is no secret that Martin O’Neill has money to spend in the transfer window, and with misfiring hitman Milan Baros possibly on the way out, he will look to bring in a high-profile striker. Jermaine Defoe was the recent target, but he is now having a successful run in the team at Tottenham and his strike partner Robbie Keane may be more likely to make the move to Villa Park, with a fee in excess of £5m. Miroslav Klose may be a slightly pricier second option for O’Neill.

4) James Beattie to Newcastle United

Since Alan Shearer’s retirement Newcastle have been looking for a target man to accompany their pacy frontmen Martins, Owen and Ameobi. James Beattie may not have hit any kind of form at Everton, but there are arguments that he is not deployed in a way to maximize his potential, and Glenn Roeder may well feel that he can get the best out of the big £4m rated striker. Best to hide all the pies first though.

5) Matthew Upson and Lucas Neill to Liverpool

Liverpool’s defence has not quite been up to their high standards this season, and Rafa Benitez will be keen to sign some additional players in the Window. Matthew Upson seems like the most likely candidate. The former England defender wants to leave Birmingham City and a fee of around £6m could prize him away. In the right back slot, Lucas Neill seems set to leave Blackburn for a considerably lesser fee, with the reds his preferred destination.

6) Sylvain Distin to Newcastle United

The big French defender has been monumental at Man City in recent times, and may now feel that it is time for a new challenge. Newcastle are desperate to bring in a new central defender and this transfer could be a marriage made in heaven for the two parties. City will not let him go on the cheap though, and expect the Toon to have to pay around £8m for him. They may think of selling Titus Bramble though to help fund this move - although I’m not sure how much help £1.50 would be.

7) Alan Smith to Watford on Loan

With Henrik Larsson coming in to the Man United strikeforce and Solskjaer fit again, there is no place for Alan Smith any more at Old Trafford. Expect him to be shipped out next summer for a fee, but in the mean time Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd would be delighted to take on the striker with the reddest lips in Football to help save his club from relegation.

8) David Beckham to West Ham United (hahahahahahaha!!!!!!)

Don’t laugh - Stranger things have happened. The boy Beckham was born and raised in the East End of London, before being pinched by Man Utd. and as new Madrid manager Fabio Capello seems intent on forcing the former England captain out of the club, be prepared for a January swoop from new Hammers manager Alan Curbishley, who is keen for someone to supply the bullets for returning striker Dean Ashton.

Last Weeks Premiership Results (Sat 23rd December)

Fulham 0 West Ham 0

Report: West Ham defender Paul Konchesky was sent off as a glut of missed chances saw a lively London derby finish goalless at Craven Cottage. Konchesky was given his marching orders in controversial circumstances with six minutes of normal time left after bringing down Wayne Routledge just outside the area.

Arsenal 6 Blackburn 2
Gilberto Silva (10)
Hleb (23)
Adebayor (pen 27)
Van Persie (85, 88)
Flamini (90)
Nonda (pen 3, 69)

Report: Arsenal got their festive schedule off to the perfect start with a 6-2 thrashing of Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners may be trailing Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for the Barclays Premiership title but there were glimpses of what this current crop of talented Gunners can produce as they recovered from conceding an early penalty to complete a comprehensive win.

Aston Villa 0 Man Utd 3
  Ronaldo (58, 85)
Scholes (64)

Report: Two-goal Cristiano Ronaldo's virtuoso performance and a superb strike from Paul Scholes helped put Manchester United's Premiership title challenge back on track with a 3-0 win at Aston Villa. United showed they were suffering no hangover from their shock defeat at West Ham to ensure they went into Christmas as leaders from Chelsea.

Liverpool 2 Watford 0
Bellamy (47)
Alonso (88)

Report: Liverpool made it 26 home league games without defeat as they overcame Watford 2-0 this afternoon - equalling a run last accomplished under Kenny Dalglish in 1991. Rafael Benitez's men may not quite be up to that vintage, but they are on the sort of run now with four straight league wins, that at least should secure them another season in the Champions League.

Man City 0 Bolton 2
  Anelka (8, 25)

Report: Old-boy Nicolas Anelka plunged Manchester City into a relegation crisis with a two-goal salvo at Eastlands. Anelka netted a first-half brace to ensure Bolton were never seriously threatened in a north-west derby which saw the Blues badly exposed.

Middlesbrough 2 Charlton 0
Yakubu (29)
Arca (52)

Report: Julio Arca saved Middlesbrough from the grisly prospect of spending Christmas Day in the Premiership drop zone as his second-half strike sunk Charlton 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium. The Argentinian drilled a powerful left-foot effort past Addicks keeper Scott Carson in the 52nd minute to put the seal on a workmanlike performance from Gareth Southgate's men.

Newcastle 3 Tottenham 1
Dyer (3)
Martins (7)
Parker (34)
Murphy (15)

Report: Resurgent Newcastle laid down a marker for the second half of the season after staging a first-half blitz to see off Tottenham 3-1. Manager Glenn Roeder insisted in the run-up to the game that his side should set their sights on European qualification after mounting a concerted fightback in recent weeks. And after a fifth Barclays Premiership victory in six attempts, his view does not appear too bullish.

Portsmouth 3 Sheff. Utd. 1
Kozluk (o.g. 48)
Campbell (54)
Pamarot (68)
Hulse (4)

Report: Portsmouth staged a second-half comeback in their Premiership clash with Sheffield United to maintain their hopes of challenging for Champions League qualification with a 3-1 win. Rob Hulse had given the visitors an early lead at Fratton Park but the hosts turned the game around at the start of the second half, equalising before Sol Campbell established the lead.

Reading 0 Everton 2
  Johnson (14)
McFadden (47)

Report: Goals from Andrew Johnson and James McFadden allowed Everton to climb above Reading with a 2-0 win at the Madejski Stadium. David Moyes' side were fully deserving of the points as Reading, who had surrendered a lead to lose to Blackburn a week ago, failed to create much.

Wigan 2 Chelsea 3
Heskey (45, 75) Lampard (13)
Kalou (31)
Robben (90)

Report: Chelsea winger Arjen Robben scored a stunning late winner as Jose Mourinho's side kept up the pressure on Manchester United at the top of the Premiership table. The Blues looked on course for an easy victory as they cruised into a two-goal lead by the half-hour mark with goals from stand-in captain Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou.

Last Weeks Premiership Results (Mon 26th & Tue 27th December)

Chelsea 2 Reading 2
Drogba (38, 72) Lita (67)
Essien (o.g. 85)

Report: A bizarre own goal from Michael Essien prevented Chelsea from going top of the Barclays Premiership as brave Reading left Stamford Bridge with an unlikely share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw. The Blues looked on course for victory with Didier Drogba's double sandwiching Leroy Lita's equaliser but a blunder from Ashley Cole in the 85th minute handed Reading a point.

Tottenham 2 Aston Villa 1
Defoe (58, 77) Barry (81)

Report: Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored twice to defeat Aston Villa 2-1 and extend his side's winning streak at White Hart Lane. Spurs had won their previous 11 home games but a draw, the result of the three previous meetings between these two teams, looked likely until Defoe pounced.

West Ham 1 Portsmouth 2
Sheringham (81) Primus (16, 38)

Report: Linvoy Primus scored his first goals for two years in a 2-1 win to send Portsmouth back into the top four of the Barclays Premiership - and leave West Ham in deep trouble following a maiden defeat for new boss Alan Curbishley.

Blackburn 1 Liverpool 0
McCarthy (49)

Report: Benni McCarthy's 10th goal of the season and a series of super saves by Brad Friedel combined to present Blackburn with three priceless points in a 1-0 win over Liverpool.

Bolton 2 Newcastle 1
Ramage (o.g. 32)
Anelka (57)
Dyer (8)

Report: Nicolas Anelka claimed his third goal in as many days as Bolton came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1 for the second time this season. Wanderers trailed to Kieron Dyer's eighth-minute strike and could have been in even deeper trouble as the Magpies made an excellent start.

Everton 0 Middlesbrough 0

Report: Andrew Johnson was again at the centre of a controversial penalty claim as Everton were left bitterly frustrated by Barclays Premiership strugglers Middlesbrough and referee Phil Dowd in a goalless draw at Goodison Park. England striker Johnson appeared to be hauled back inside the 18-yard box but Dowd ignored his appeals for a spot-kick.

Man Utd 3 Wigan 1
Ronaldo (47, 51)
Solskjaer (59)
Baines (pen 90)

Report: Cristiano Ronaldo answered Sir Alex Ferguson's title SOS to send Manchester United four points clear at the Premiership summit following a 3-1 win over Wigan. Goalless at half-time against unfancied Wigan, with Wayne Rooney struggling and five senior stars left out, Ronaldo came to the rescue, following up his two-goal salvo at Aston Villa by bagging another brace, the crucial opener coming with his first touch just 69 seconds after his arrival.

Sheff Utd 0 Man City 1
  Ireland (78)

Report: Stephen Ireland finally scored his first goal for Manchester City as Stuart Pearce's side ended a run of three successive defeats with a 1-0 success at Sheffield United. Making his 39th appearance for the club, midfielder Ireland drove home a 78th-minute winner to hand Sheffield United a second loss in four days over the Christmas period.

Watford 1 Arsenal 2
Smith (23) Gilberto Silva (19)
Van Persie (83)

Report: Robin van Persie's late winner allowed Arsenal to reclaim a Champions League spot and avoid dropping points at bottom club Watford with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road. The Hornets had looked set for a point until the Dutchman struck with seven minutes remaining.

Charlton 2 Fulham 2
Ambrose (19)
Bent (45)
McBride (13)
Quedrue (90)

Report: A stoppage-time goal from Franck Queudrue robbed Alan Pardew of a winning start to his career as Charlton manager. First-half goals from Darren Ambrose and Darren Bent looked to have given him the perfect beginning but Queudrue struck in the closing seconds to earn Fulham a point they hardly deserved.

Team of the Week - Bolton Wanderers

There is no doubt that Manchester United had a good week, but I have been very impressed with the way that Bolton have come back recently to register four straight wins, and climb back to third place. Four losses and a draw last month had some saying that Bolton would drop towards the bottom of the league, but Sam Allardyce’s side have fought back hard, and with Nicolas Anelka in free scoring form, a push for a Champions League place is on the cards.

Player of the Week - Cristiano Ronaldo

Many players had a great week this week, including Nicolas Anelka who hit three goals – Gilberto Silva, who popped up with two goals to maintain Arsenal’s run or Linvoy Primus, who was a rock in the Portsmouth defence and got two against West Ham - but Cristiano Ronaldo outshone them all. In a week where United extended their lead over Chelsa, the Portuguese winger scored four goals, and could have bagged more, in two outstanding performances that prove he is one of the Premiership’s most skilful players.

Donkey of the Week - Chelsea’s Back Four

Jose Mourinho’s team were lucky not to end this week with only two points from six, after an undeserved last minute victory over Wigan. Their problem is that they are suddenly conceding goals, and it does not take a genius to work out that losing skipper John Terry has been a major problem. Ashley Cole has not found his form in a blue shirt yet, and was instrumental in the horror own goal conceded against Reading, Paulo Ferreira is as error-prone as ever, and Jose Mourinho must wish that Khalid ‘The Cannibal’ Boularouz, would retire to a darkened room and eat himself… help in January is definitely needed…

Upcoming Premiership Games (Sat 30th December)

Blackburn v Middlesbrough
Suspensions
Injuries BLA - Nelson, Reid, Roberts, Enckelman, (Khizanishvili)
MID - Ehiogu, Parlour, Huth, (Xavier)
Prediction 2-0

Reason: After last weeks win against Liverpool, Blackburn will have the confidence returning to their players. They should be able to turn over a poor Middlesbrough side that were lucky to come away from their match against Everton with a point.

Bolton v Portsmouth
Suspensions BOL - Ivan Campo
Injuries BOL - Fortune, O’Brien, (Giannakopoulos)
POR - Stefanovic, Lua-Lua
Prediction 1-1

Reason: The Premiership’s two in form sides are matched against each other here in what should be an excellent, tactical game. Much will depend on whether Nicolas Anelka’s hot streak keeps up, but I think the most likely result here will be a draw.

Charlton v Aston Villa
Suspensions
Injuries CHA - Reid, Young, Lisbie, (Rommedahl)
AST - Taylor, Sorensen, Laursen, Moore, Delaney
Prediction 1-1

Reason: Alan Pardew’s second game as Charlton manager, and he will be looking to get three points from this one. He may be disappointed though as although Aston Villa have faltered over the last few weeks they have not been playing badly – and they should manage to take a point from the Valley.

Chelsea v Fulham
Suspensions CHE - Boularouz, Ballack
FUL - Helguson
Injuries CHE - Terry, Cudicini, J Cole, Cech
FUL - Boa Morte, Bouba Diop, Bullard, Pearce, Pembridge, Elliott
Prediction 3-0

Reason: Fulham have some serious injury problems at the moment, as do Chelsea – but I feel that Jose Mourinho and his deep squad will be desperate to get back to winning ways, and that may well translate into a few goals against Fulham today.

Everton v Newcastle
Suspensions
Injuries EVE - Cahill, Hibbert, Pistone
NEW - N’Zogbia, Bramble, Moore, Bernard, Carr, Ameobi, Owen, Krul, (Given), (Harper), (Duff)
Prediction 2-1

Reason: Newcastle have been better in the last few weeks, without looking like the finished article. A loss away to Bolton hampered their progress last week, while Everton have been finding goals hard to come by in their recent games, drawing 0-0 against Middlesbrough. They should have enough here though to get past the Toon’s dodgy defence.

Man Utd v Reading
Suspensions MAN - Scholes, Vidic
Injuries MAN - Carrick
REA - Stack, Convey, Cox, Mate, Kitson
Prediction 2-0

Reason: Reading will go into this game feeling that they can get a result against both top sides in the same week. Whilst Chelsea have looked vulnerable at times this season though, Man Utd have looked imperious – West Ham aside – and I think particularly at home, they may not drop many more points this season.

Sheff Utd v Arsenal
Suspensions
Injuries SHF - Bennett, Shipperley, Li Tie, (Leigertwood)
ARS - Ljungberg, Henry, Gallas, Diaby, (Eboue)
Prediction 1-1

Reason: This will be a tough game for Arsene Wenger’s boys, and I would expect Sheffield United to try to get at Arsenal from the first whistle. They will make things hard for the Gunners, who I think will be happy to come away with a point from Bramall Lane

Tottenham v Liverpool
Suspensions
Injuries TOT - Lennon, Jenas, Keane
LIV - Zenden, Sissoko, Kewell
Prediction 1-0

Reason: Tottenham have a wonderful home record this year, winning their last 12 home games, but despite Liverpool’s defeat at Blackburn, I see the Red’s bouncing back and this ending in a stalemate

Watford v Wigan
Suspensions WIG - McCulloch
Injuries WAT - Chambers, King, Carlisle
WIG - Scharner, Camara, Taylor, (Valencia)
Prediction 2-1

Reason: It is getting to the point now where Watford simply must start winning games if they want to stay in the division, and this is definitely a winnable game. Wigan are themselves only four points above the dropzone, and also need points, but I can see a rare win for the Hornets here and a late Christmas present for Aidy Boothroyd.

West Ham v Man City
Suspensions MAC - Barton
WHM - Reo-Coker
Injuries WHM - Collins, Ashton
MAC - Sinclair, Mills, Jihai, (Hamann), (Richards)
Prediction 1-1

Reason: West Ham’s loss at home to Portsmouth would have been terribly demoralizing after the unbeaten start to Alan Curbishley’s West Ham career. He will now be trying to pick up his players to face a Man City team that have started to get results away from home after a shocking start to the season. It will be tough for the Hammers, and I can see them falling short again with a draw.

Upcoming Premiership Games (Mon 1st Jan & Tue 2nd Jan)

Fulham v Watford
Prediction 2-1

Reason: Fulham have generally done well at home under Chris Coleman, and he has enough quality in the side to beat Watford, who are fighting hard, but struggling to score goals. This should be a home win despite the Cottagers injury woes.

Liverpool v Bolton
Prediction 2-2

Reason: Liverpool had a poor result last week against Blackburn, but at Anfield they are a different proposition. Facing Bolton though, will be a tough task, especially as the Trotters have found some form again. I think this could be a surprise draw as Bolton continue their good run.

Man City v Everton
Prediction 0-1

Reason Man City seem to have turned around their poor away form, but unfortunately they seem also to have turned around their excellent home form, with a couple of recent losses at Eastlands. Everton seem to play with less pressure away from Goodison, so do not be surprised with an away win here.

Middlesbrough v Sheff Utd
Prediction 3-1

Reason: Neil Warnock’s Sheffield United will surely be around the mix when relegation is decided this season. They have shown fight to try and stay above the relegation places, but I think it is looking as though they may just fall short. Gareth Southgate’s Middlesbrough side have got too much quality to let the Blades in here.

Newcastle v Man Utd
Prediction 1-3

Reason: The Toon Army will surely be roaring on Newcastle at St. James’ here in what looks to be a great match up. Despite the home advantage though, I think Man United will take all three points here, as although Glenn Roeder’s side have improved, they still have problems at the back which the Red Devils should exploit.

Portsmouth v Tottenham
Prediction 2-1

Reason: Tottenham are rising up the Premiership table fast, but it is largely down to their excellent home form, rather than anything they have achieved away from White Hart Lane. Portsmouth look a good side, a cut above the rest of the pack and should take all three points here.

Reading v West Ham
Prediction 1-3

Reason: Despite Reading’s excellent point at Stamford Bridge, they have been in a mini-slump of late, and with Alan Curbishley breathing new life into the Hammers, I expect them to take this one.

Wigan v Blackburn
Prediction 0-2

Reason: Wigan are sliding down the table fast, and they have indeed only taken one point from their last five home games. They may well be the team that gets sucked into the relegation scrap, and with Blackburn desperate to climb away from the bottom themselves, I expect them to nick this in a close game.

Arsenal v Charlton
Prediction 3-2

Reason: I think that Alan Pardew will get a response from his new charges at the Valley, and they may just have a slim hope of staying up this season. This game though, holds little for them, as Arsenal are just beginning to find their free flowing form, and should take three points. Expect Charlton to score though.

Aston Villa v Chelsea
Prediction 1-1

Reason: Aston Villa are on a worrying slide, but there is nothing like the visit of the Champions to turn that around. Players will be playing for their places, with manager Martin O’Neill ready to spend some cash in the transfer window, and I feel that Chelsea could come up short again here with a draw the most likely result.
